There
was strong growth in the trend labour force in 2004.
In 2001, the largest industry employer in Hervey Bay
was retail trade (employing 2,396 persons, or 18.4%
of the total). Health & community services (12.5%),
accommodation, cafes & restaurants (9.1%) and education
(8.9%) are also major employers.
Because of the development of several hospitals, the health & community services
with accommodation, cafes & restaurants industries
recorded the largest increases in employment in the 5 years to 2001. This was mainly
at the expense of the construction and mining industries.
The recent property boom and increased development
in Hervey Bay has particularly led to employment growth in the construction
industry over the past two years.
