Culture and Recreation
Hervey Bay is characterised by a relaxed lifestyle and perfect subtropical climate.
Sustainable use of the waters of the Bay attracts a range of recreational activities including year round swimming, diving, boating and fishing. World Heritage listed Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world, is right on Hervey Bay's doorstep and provides the venue for a unique eco experience.

Hervey Bay City is structured around a network of parks and shared walk/cycle paths connecting a range of recreation facilities. Recreation spaces include the Burrum National Park, Arkarra Lagoons, Botanic Gardens and kilometres of foreshore reserve. Community parks are landscaped and themed to suit different age groups. Organ Park features a playground for toddlers and younger children, complete with train and sandpit; the Scarness Foreshore features swings, a hammock and roundabout for older, more adventurous children; while Bill Fraser Park features a shaded giant chess set and eight normal sized chess sets inlaid into picnic tables for people of all ages.

The Link Mobility Corridor is an 8km landscaped environmental corridor for pedestrians and cyclists. It extends from Urangan through the centre of the City to Pialba. The Link compliments the foreshore shared path which stretches approximately 13 kms along the coastline from Point Vernon to Urangan. These shared pathways provide a safe and inviting venue for informal recreational activities and exercise for people of all ages, particularly for parents with children in strollers, older people and people with a disability.

Participation in structured sport is popular in Hervey Bay although many people prefer to participate in unstructured activities such as walking, fishing, swimming, playing golf and cycling. Major sporting and recreation reserves include the Hervey Bay Sports and Leisure Park (sports include soccer, hockey, rugby league, tennis and softball), PCYC, Walkers Road Recreation Reserve, NE McLean Oval (AFL) and the Dundowran Equestrian Park.

The Hervey Bay Arts and Crafts Village is a purpose zoned area for arts and cultural groups to meet. It is home to the Yag'ubi Festivals Association (an annual festival of music, food and visual arts), Hervey Bay City Musicians and Hervey Bay Woodworkers.

Other popular recreational activities include the garden club, bird watching, astronomy, community theatre, music and dancing. Hervey Bay also boasts a Regional Art Gallery, the first joint use community and university library in Australia and an historical museum.
